Move QGIS.us to discourse

Added a comment at the bottom to begin the migration

So in all the talk over discourse I did some digging and Jeff Johnson is the admin for the QGIS Us users list (https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-us-user). After emailing him he said I could take over as he's busy and has also lost the admin password.

I'd also like to move the list to discourse - but also keep this list (which I think is the default anyway).

Jeff is at ortelius@…

Snippet of the Email: I am still an admin. Randy, I thought you were taking this over?

To whomever receives this -- can you e-mail me directly? Several people have been trying to figure out who is the owner of the QGIS-US list.

Thanks! Keith

Did you just want admin rights to the mailman list or did you want the list also moved over to discourse?

If you are going to be moving over to discourse anyway probably doesn't matter much if you have admin rights to the mailman list or not since we pull the mbox from the backend anyway.

Replying to rjhale1971:

Unclear which mode you want from the above:

There are 2 options

Option 1: Just have discourse mirror the list, HOWEVER no one will be able to use discourse except for searching in this mode (and getting notified of new items). All interaction still happens on the mailman list. What happens is we take a snapshot of the archives, port it to discourse, and just have discourse subscribe to the mailman list moving forward so it can continue to receive postings.

This is for example the state sac-mailing-list is in - https://discourse.osgeo.org/c/sac-global-category/sac-mailing-list/13

Option 2: Move to discourse completely. In this scenario, we take a final snapshot of mailman qgis-users-us, and port it over to discourse.

Everyone on list should be sent a final note, to go to discourse.osgeo.org to login and set their preferences accordingly and watch the new list.

We turn off qgis-users-us on mailman.

The new list will have a new email address qgis-users-us@… which is how people that prefer to email will send mail moving forward.

We then shut off the old mailing list qgis-users-us@…. Note the archives will be kept though in case something didn't get ported over correctly or just for those who prefer the historical view before the change.

If you are unsure exactly what you want to do, it's fairly easy to transition from Option 1 to Option 2, however it's very difficult to go from Option 2 back to Option 1 mostly because of the annoyance of telling people "We're moving back"

I'd like to go ahead and move the List to discourse using option 2. I assume I'll assume control of this so Jeff doesn't have to mess with it anymore.

Randal, Work is done, you might want to send a final email to the mailing list before I turn it off. Please contact us to show you how to create an invite to the subscribers.
