Transfer DNS for geotools.org to OSGeo control

Reported by: acuster Owned by: warmerdam
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: SysAdmin Keywords: dns
Cc: jmacgill@…, jbirch, martin.desruisseaux@…

Description (last modified by warmerdam)

As discussed in #osgeo, the GeoTools project would like to transfer control of the domain

geotools.org

from the project to OSGeo.

We have the EPP code (contact acuster a t gmail.com ) so it should be possible to transfer the domain to the DNS register used by OSGeo, which is apparently PAIRNIC. The current DNS register is www.easyspace.com.

We have, to my knowledge, only three re-directs in place:

  geotools.org     -> www.geotools.org
  www.geotools.org -> http://docs.codehaus.org/display/Geotools/Home
  svn.geotools.org -> gtsvn.refractions.net

However, we will probably use the opportunity to redefine more so we would like to learn how we can add re-directs.

Thanks for any help.

Adrian has provided the EPP code, but when I attempt to transfer the domain on the pairnic site it says it cannot be transferred without even asking for the EPP code, and directs me to contact support at pairnic. I have sent pairnic support an email about the issue.

The tracking number for your request is [F2E4W5Y].

comment:4 by warmerdam, 16 years ago

Hello,

Unfortunately, it isn't possible to transfer geotools.org because it is in the Redemption Grace Period (RGP).

In the RGP, the domain name cannot be renewed normally, but can be reactivated by the original registrar. Please contact the original registrar to ask about their procedures and costs for reactivation.

You will not be able to transfer the domain name until it has been activated. If you do not want to reactivate the domain name from the RGP, you can wait until the domain name is deleted and you can try to register again. Once it is deleted, anyone can try to register it. You will not be guaranteed to own the domain name if you choose this option. You should start trying to register the domain name again on November 28. The deletion might occur a few days after that date.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Eric H.

Hello all,

Would it be possible to try again? Apparently, the domain has been reactivated---the domains resolve and I don't see any "Redemption Grace Period" in the Whois info.

It appears the transfer has been successfully initiated - I opted for a five year registration.

Apparently the next step involves email to the DNS admin contact, which is (I think) Jason. Adding Jason to the cc: list.

Jason - let me know if you get any instructions with regard to this.

comment:7 by jbirch, 16 years ago

Possibly, but usually the email would go to the transferring admin contact (James) rather than the receiving admin contact. I'll let you know if I see anything.

comment:8 by warmerdam, 16 years ago

... James received an email requesting he visit a particular pairnic url to confirm the transfer, this is my reply. Andrea / James,

Jason is the admin contact for OSGeo's DNS service, but I am acting as technical admin for OSGeo. I have visited the pairnic url listed in James email and confirmed things. It gave me a confirmation code "XXXXXXXX" though I'm not clear what the purpose of that is.

The status of the domain on the OSGeo control panel is now listed as "Waiting for completion" so I think perhaps there is no further action required unless James, or Jason receive further email instructions.

We have been unable to complete the transfer for the domain name
geotools.org to pairNIC.

The transfer was refused for the following reason:

Denied by other registrar or registry

We have refunded the transfer fee.

We would love to have you as a customer. Please contact us at

again. We'd be glad to help you through the process.

Just got off the phone with "Douglas" at easyspace.

They apparently had a 60 day lock on the domain "since it was a new domain" which was what prevented transfer. That has apparently now been removed.

Then met FrankW on irc and asked him to attempt the transfer again, which he should be in the process of doing.

I have restarted the transfer process. The domain now shows as "Waiting for approval".

comment:12 by warmerdam, 16 years ago

Hello,

We noticed that you were attempting to transfer geotools.org again. At
this time it needs to be approved by the Administrative Contact,
jmacgill@gmail.com.

If you can access this e-mail address but have not received the approval
request, please let us know.

If you cannot access this e-mail address, it will need to be updated at
the current domain name registrar before the domain name can be
transferred. Once you update your e-mail address, please reply to this
e-mail, and we will send the transfer approval e-mail to the new address.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Eric H.

Added James and Martin to the cc: list. It looks like we just need James to respond to some sort of administrative confirmation email.

comment:14 by warmerdam, 16 years ago

Hello Frank,

James will also have to provide the Transfer Authorization Code for this
domain name in order for the transfer to proceed. This code is 6-16
characters long and serves as a password for geotools.org. If James does
not already have this code, we ask that he please contact his registrar,
Easyspace Limited, and ask them to provide it for him.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Rhonda

Hey all,

Just got off the phone with easyspace. They say everything is ready to go but have not received any transfer request from pairnic in the past week.

Isn't the code that pairnic is asking for the same as the EPP code that we all now have? That is supposed to be enough to complete the transfer---no mails needed. Could one of you please give that code to PairNIC so they can fully initiate the transfer?

thanks, --adrian

comment:16 by warmerdam, 16 years ago

I re-entered the EPP code when I initiated the transfer the second time.

I'll email back to pairnic support with the details and see what they say.

This is a surprisingly messy process!

comment:17 by warmerdam, 16 years ago

(to pairnic support)

Rhonda,

One of the other people involved in this process has been in contact with easyspace who indicate that things are ready to go, but that they have not received a request from Pairnic.

When I re-initiated the transfer (on the 19th) I provided this EPP code in the web dialog:

EPP: XXXXXXXX

Is there another transfer code you require in addition to this?

I haven't heard any indication from James Macgill that he has received any new request for authorization though he is a pretty busy guy and might just not have noticed or acted on it yet.

I appreciate the human attention on this issue.

PS. This process is documented on our side at:

Description: modified (diff)

OK, we now appear to control the domain. However, it is still referring to the old "zonedit" name servers. Shall I update it to use the pairnic name servers? How will the redirects be implemented? Should I be using CNAME records to implement the redirects as oppposed the the A records to define an IP# for the DNS entries?

comment:19 by warmerdam, 16 years ago

A review of the existing geotools entries seems to show A records pointing to 69.72.142.98 (geotools.org, and www.geotools.org) and 64.40.100.236 for svn.osgeo.org, though I may be misconstruing the "dig" results. DNS is not my forte. :-)

comment:20 by acuster, 16 years ago

Hey all,

It looks like some other folks will try to move the svn server over to OSGeo in the nearish terms. We can aim to move the dns hosting when we re-define the machines to which our domains point.

So I think we are done.

Resolution: fixed

Marking as fixed.

Thanks everyone for putting up with this long drawn out change and thanks James for dealing with the domain registration all these years.
