Description
I don't know if the following suggestion is better suited for a composer enhancement or a for a plugin suggestion, I'll leave this to you (Marco), in case close this ticket and I'll open a "plugin idea" one on the plugin trac.
Regularly it pops out the question/request by someone asking about if QGIS can create mapbooks.
I used to create mapbooks years ago (on proprietary software), when working on the field, and I know that this feature can be really useful.
The idea is the following: create a layout then choose a scale, a paper size and orientation and a % of overlapping.
A mapbook tool will then create many layouts (pdf files, or directly to the printer) by fitting the layout into the page size. Each layout will show a portion -at the chosen scale- of the original layout map and each layout map will overlap the near ones with the chosen %.
A "overview" sheet should be also produced to show all the mapbook "pieces" (usually numbered).
