possibly related to https://trac.osgeo.org/osgeolive/ticket/2074
I boot the v12 USB on an Asus G552V, choose 'Try without installing' and get the OSGeo Live boot splash. It hangs after a while (with the last dot white) and does not proceed further.
I've tried the same USB on another machine and it works fine.

This appears to be a graphics driver issue in Ubuntu on ASUS ROG machines that have dual GPU. Seems there is a grub workaround but for the live boot you'll need to make the modification to the grub launch every time you boot up.
Add one of the following to grub boot command:
