I think that misses the point- ER Mapper used to run one for sharing large global geodatasets, and it was very good, but their new owners decided to abandon it. The site name (or various spellings there of) may then have fallen into the hands of less scientifically minded folks which is what you're seeing now.

Hamish, if you think we ought to keep this ticket please reopen. But you are right #458 could be considered a duplicate, so probably ok to keep this closed.
