OSGeo incubation for Orfeo Toolbox (OTB)

After participating to Foss4g 2009 and 2010 and discussing with some OSGeo members, we realized that it would be good for our project to be associated with OSGeo. The project is the Orfeo Toolbox (OTB) available at ​http://www.orfeo-toolbox.org. This is a project started by CNES (the French Space Agency) in 2006 to provide open source tools to process satellite images and extract information. There are several links with other OSGeo project such as Gdal and ossim. The project is currently released under the CeCILL license (compatible with GPL).

5. Why is hosting at OSGeo good for your project? Hosting is not currently required, but it would be good for our project to be associated with OSGeo (public awareness and quality control). Moreover the procedure of installation of OTB is mainly based on OSGeo tools.

6. Type of application does this project represent(client, server, standalone, library, etc.): library with some applications

7. Please describe any relationships to other open source projects. Intensive use of Gdal and ossim. Moreover there is support for PostGIS, MapNik and also and OTB plugins for Quantum GIS.

8. Please describe any relationships with commercial companies or products. Possibility to access the library from IDL/Envi (ITT) by defining some wrapping (but no automatic way to provide this wrapping available so far). Idem for Matlab through Java bindings calls.

9. Which open source license(s) will the source code be released under? CeCILL (GPL compatible)

10. Is there already a beta or official release? Current release is 3.8.

11. What is the origin of your project (commercial, experimental, thesis or other higher education, government, or some other source)? government (CNES)

12. Does the project support open standards? Which ones and to what extent? (OGC, w3c, ect.) Has the software been certified to any standard (CITE for example)? If not, is it the intention of the project owners to seek certification at some point? Support of open data standard through gdal/ogr

13. Is the code free of patents, trademarks, and do you control the copyright? The copyright is controlled by CNES

14. How many people actively contribute (code, documentation, other?) to the project at this time? 15 people currently contributing

15. How many people have commit access to the source code respository? Distributed source control is used (mercurial) so some people are participating through other members of the team. Currently 15 people have a push access to the main repository.

16. Approximately how many users are currently using this project? very hard to evaluate now.

17. What type of users does your project attract (government, commercial, hobby, academic research, etc. )? government, academic research

18. If you do not intend to host any portion of this project using the OSGeo infrastructure, why should you be considered a member project of the OSGeo Foundation? strong interaction with other projects of the foundation

19. Does the project include an automated build and test? cmake and ctest with a nightly submission of more that 1200 tests on more than 10 different platforms, ​http://dash.orfeo-toolbox.org/ .

20. What language(s) are used in this project? (C/Java/perl/etc) C++ with availability of python binding, java binding.

21. What is the dominant written language (i.e. English, French, Spanish, German, etc) of the core developers?

The code, comments and documentation are in English, the public mailing list (otb-users and otb-developers) are also in English

22. What is the (estimated) size of a full release of this project? How many users do you expect to download the project when it is released?

40 MB for the source. The files are available from other sources as well. Binary packages are available for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Seven, MacOS X 10.5 and higher, Ubuntu 9.10 and higher, and OpenSuse 11.2 and higher. A first Incubation ticket was opened in 2009 (number 501). Lot's of progress have been made since this date.So, we look forward to hearing from the Incubation Committee and moving our application forward! We are willing also to add the OTB library into the OsGEO live project.We hope that the recent availability of OTB packages on Linux will help in our project.
