On #postfix IRC channel they tell me "postscreen" is a newer approach to reduce spam and does the same as "postgrey" plus more: 

zilirc | btw don't mix postgrey with postscreen, they sort-of do the same thing 
zilirc | I strongly encourage people to use postscreen because it has more features
lunaphyte | indeed, traditional greylisting software is not really the way to go, these days.  use postscreen

I should add that postscreen is included in the postfix package while postgrey is in a separate package.

Another thing to add: postgrey (greylisting) is making the mail queue grow and slowing down delivery

The spammer is not subscribed, the list is moderated and still it comes through :(

Markus: list being moderated and mails from non-subscribed still coming through sounds like a bug worth a separate ticket, please file one under the SysAdmin/Mailman category
