Description

Collecting feedback here for discussion:

1) the sponsor logos in the footer are not based on sponsorship levels

Correct, this is by design. OSGeo seeks to communicate that sponsorship is a thing by showing a wide range of organizations.

ideas: The frequency could be adjust by sponsorship category?

2) the sponsor logos appear to be part of the page content causing upset

Yes this is a real problem - for example making "osgeo sponsors" on an event page look like sponsors of an event. This leads to questions like "I sponsored the sprint why am I not listed?"

Idea: Change heading to "OSGeo Foundation Sponsors" or "Foundation Sponsors" to make it clear it is not a sponsor of the event, local chapter, or initiative...

Notes:

  • In mock-up design we arranged logos on a gray triangle which made it very clear it was not part of the page content; however some sponsor logos looked bad so we had to change to a white background.
  • In the worse case of conflict the sponsor logos were removed from the project pages due to this kind of conflict

Note the OGC have a fun idea rotating through sponsor logos: https://www.ogc.org

I think the movement would detract the eye from page content (we have no other animations on our website).

Reference: https://www.osgeo.org/about/how-to-become-a-sponsor/

OGC does not modify the Sponsors logo. OSGeo modifies the sponsors logo as the logo that is given by the sponsor has colors.

In the link above, it does not mention that their logo will be converted to gray scale.

Did a consultation to the sponsor's branding guide for the gray change was made?

We have our branding guide: https://www.osgeo.org/about/branding-material/ and as far as I remember (I have to use my memory because the link to the pdf, is not working) we have a section for what exact grays must be used in our logo. If someone needs to use the gray scale of our logo, do we expect them to use our branding guide or just make the automatic change like we are doing with the sponsors logo.

I can see that OGC solved a problem of scalability with the moving logos, so if I am a sponsor, and I want to check that my logo is in OGC: Without refreshing a page I see the logo with the original colors, just a matter of time for it to show up.

We solved the problem of scalability with only 5 random logos showing, so if I am a sponsor and I want to check that my logo is as promised on the bottom of the page: I need to refresh the page many times maybe I get lucky to see my logo, and when I see my logo it has been changed to black and white it is not the logo I sent.

My point:

  • the sponsors benefits do not mention gray scale on the bottom of the page.
  • The sponsors benefits mention that their logo will be on the bottom of the page and that might not happen, because only 5 logos appear at a given time.

About the notes: The the design was not good.

What do we want? what is the priority?

If you remove the sponsors just because the page does not "look good" and its causing conflict, then you are not enforcing what has been promised to the sponsors.

Choose:

  • Lets not be true to what we promise to the sponsors to keep our pages "look good"
  • Lets be true to what we promised to the sponsors regardless of the looks of the page.

The "OSGeo placement included for diamond and platinum" was for the marketing materials handout at events, you can see it on the back of some of our handouts.
