www.osgeo.org donate button

Description

The staging.osgeo.org website is close to ready, one thing we have not added yet is a "donate" button from our original Drupal website.

Ideally we would like donations to have a chance to specify what they are for in the PayPal comment field (for example "map server", "travel grant", etc...). See example instructions here.

The give-up.com word press plugin came recommended.

I would prefer an html widget, over a plugin for maintainability. I also can't easily find the plugin suggested, please provide a link to the documentation for it.

It may be possible on the Paypal side to customize the form to make it easy for donors pick from a list the intended use of the donation. Though I think a disclaimer needs to be in place, unless the board has specified that paypal donations will always go to exactly what a donor specifies.

Ha ha - auto correct messed up my link.

The cone that was recommended to me was https://givewp.com/ (it provides a nice email receipt and so on for tax purposes depending on our 501 status).

As for donations, we do an annual call out for sponsors listing activities, projects and events that can be sponsored explicitly - see http://www.osgeo.org/sponsorship for "OSGeo 2017 Sponsorship Opportunities"

I will try and get a list of activities, projects and events out of tomorrows board meeting.

Informally:

  • any project that has a budget request should also be listed as a "donate" option
  • travel grant program
  • bonn code sprint
  • while we are not donating to committees, if a committee has an initiative that can be supported financially we can list it

Foss4g global and regional events are all running their own sponsorship programs.

strk suggests the following was suggested as an alternative to a proprietary plugin:

It is making it hard to run code sprints not having a PayPal button!

  • The wp-paypal button while free is not suitable (it is too complicated with a shopping cart and so on)
  • The https://givewp.com/ was more focused on our use case, code available on GitHub using a GPL license (https://github.com/impress-org/give). And once again I think we can pay for this if it enables our teams and supports an open source company produce plugins like this

Can this be considered resolved now?

Resolution: fixed
Status: closedreopened

I am reopening this as the the manner in which the addition was made conflicts with the goals of the website.

See discussion on discourse on the loss of "About OSGeo" action.

I have also reopened the website content issue.

We need a good visual design for a donate button. If fundraising is to be added to the home page it could be more kindly added by highlighting a sponsor; and having buttons for sponsorship and donation. Then it would tell the story of foss4g software being financially supported; and providing an invitation to do so.

cvvergara yes the donate button is no longer there, see above links.

I will bring this up with the marketing committee (see above comment about reopening this issue and removing the donate button)

@jive,

For our contracting sanity, I think it would be better if you created 2 new tickets for this and don't reopen old tickets especially ones that are years old.

First ticket: Remove Donate Button, feel free to remove the button yourself and close it out. I think Vicky had readded it.

Second Ticket: marked -- Add Donate button, for further discussion.

On that ticket you can put in whatever marketing committee decides should be done and we'll hold off on doing anything with that one until it is decided what to do.

The original functionality question remains unanswered - can we have wordpress plugin that can direct funds towards a specific project.

But I understand - it is nice to separate out content questions from contract / functionality questions. By placing a "button" as a quick fix on the website it:

  • stopped the functionality question about a wordpress plugin
  • stopped the content question about *how* to ask for funding
