Redirect for FOSS4G Asia
Reported by: | Jeff McKenna | Owned by:

Priority: | normal | Milestone:
Component: | SysAdmin | Keywords: | DNS, FOSS4G |
Cc: | daisuke |
Description
- need http://asia.foss4g.org to point to http://www.foss4g-asia.org/
- but actually, similar to ticket#1421, we need http://asia.foss4g.org to appear in the browser (a "reverse proxy" so it seems like the site is hosted on foss4g.org)
- server admin is @daisuke (CC'd), so he can answer questions if you need more info

I'd say having the site respond to "asia.foss4g.org" would be preferred over a reverse proxy setup.

I don't mean to be pushy, but I wonder if we can enable this soon. (Venka, who donated foss4.org, has asked me to do this...and his event is only two weeks away now) Do we need any more information to enable asia.foss4g.org for Venka? Thanks.

Assuming www.foss4g-asia.org lives at 202.181.97.21 Then we will make the DNS record. After that it's up to the people managing the server to put in the appropriate vhost configuration so that machine responds to the asia.foss4g.org name.
Sound Good? If so the DNS edit takes 5 minutes, and then can take several hours to propagate correctly. Ideally the server should already be configured to listen for requests on that name before we start.

Actually I was expecting some sort of feedback from the respective site maintainers.
According to my test they haven't set up a virtual host - and somehow I don't feel like configuring reverse proxies for people who don't even mind to respond.
Finally .... well, I'd be fine with setting up an A record on 202.181.97.21 and let them figure out by themselves ;-)

@alex yup sounds good. thanks man.
@martin as I noted earlier to you in this ticket, @daisuke has already spoken in this ticket and we were waiting for an update from you. This is really frustrating, I mean why didn't you say that you needed a comment from @daisuke a week ago?
I really feel that such a request, that will happen more and more often as we add more regional events, needs a more streamlined process.

Sorry, I did not realize the foss4g-asia.org server needs a change in VirtualHost up to today. I have asked the hosting company about the VirtualHost change because it seems it cannot change the setting flexibly in the Web interface that the company provides. I will let you know the result when I get the reply from the company.

I think VirtualHost setting in foss4g-asia.org server is now ready for accepting asia.foss4g.org.

thanks everyone. Closing ticket.
Replying to jmckenna:
I think this requires some changes of DNS (and might be reverse proxy) in foss4g.org side, not foss4g-asia.org side.
