m.nviz.image doesn't produce any output

Description
When trying to create some images with m.nviz.image, but all I get as output is a 11 byte ppm...
All I get is an unreadable ppm with 11 bytes. With format=tif, I get an error creating the file (TIFFScanlineSize64: Computed scanline size is zero.).
Opening the ppm file into a text editor, I see that all that was written was the header, and that the image size was 0,0:

navigating trough the code, I see that m.nviz.image calls GS_write_ppm to write the file, which is in lib/ogsf/gsd_img_ppm.c:

GS_write_ppm calls gsd_getimage to get the actual image data and size.
So it seems to me that gsd_getimage is not getting the image?

I'm running 7.4.0 on MacOS compiled with Homebrew. I tried in a Windows machine (7.4.0 as well) and the output (or lack of one) was the same. Not sure where the problem might be.

Is the output in the attached screenshot expected result BTW? I assumed that your sample TIF is garopaba_SOLO_bicubic in my testing.

Yes, it is the expected result.
I just upgraded to 7.4.1 (via homebrew) and the issue persists.

Not sure what's happening. Please make sure that the projection of your mapset is EPSG:32723.

Maybe, your OpenGL settings? Please try to add some debug messages in gsd_getimage in lib/ogsf/gsd_prim.c and see what glGetIntegerv returns. Add the following in line 909.

Here is the output with the debug msg: (projection is ok and region as well, I tried with other Location/Mapsets and the error is persistent)

I don't know if m.nviz.image depends on wxPython or not. But if it does, you might need to check which version you are using and whether you are compiling 32 or 64 bit.
Also, I've got new binaries posted with updated code you might want to try. They are on the GRASS for Mac web site [grassmac.wikidot.com]

I think that this issue is platform dependent. glGetIntergerv(GL_VIEWPORT, tmp)
returns an empty viewport, which should have been defined correctly in Nviz_create_render_window
(lib/nviz/render.c). This function has three defined
for X11, Aqua, and Windows. I cannot reproduce this issue on X11, but the issue is reported on Aqua and Windows. For Aqua, this routine calls aglCreatePBuffer to create a new rendering area using specified width and height. Maybe, we should check what value this routine returns.

If you can compile yourself, maybe you can try this. In Nviz_create_render_window
in lib/nviz/render.c, line 145 (trunk) or find aglCreatePBuffer
and print its return value with width and height just in case.

Maybe, I'm wrong, but GL_TEXTURE_2D
is for textures whose dimensions are a power of two. Whatever that means, width=500 and height=500 are not a power of two. Please try again after replacing GL_TEXTURE_2D
with GL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_EXT

and size=512,512
). GL_TEXTURE_2D and GL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_EXT use different coordinates, so we need to know if the rest of code works with which type of texture. Thanks.

I think this issue is different from the original one. He was able to write out an output file with just the header. I think you'll be able to see the original issue once you fix this TIFFOpen issue.
there is no permission issue as other winGRASS modules are able to write to this folder.

What about changing GL_TEXTURE_2D
to GL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_EXT
in lib/nviz/render.c? You're on MacOS, right?

Hmm... The size of the ppm is 6618224*0. OK, glViewport never gets called unless you resize the viewport. I think omitting glViewport is implementation dependent. Please try the attached patch (lib/nviz/render.c).

I didn't commit it to trunk because ideally I would have to add width and height to render_window struct if calling glViewport helps. I believe this is it, but I wanted to be sure. I don't think that all GPU vendors and drivers assume the full size without explicitly calling this function.

Please attach the output file. Also, were you getting the same 0*0 image before my patch (original issue)?
I think a solid black image of the correct size is better than a 0*0 image ;-).

You can remove my patch by commenting out line 221 GS_set_viewport
from lib/nviz/render.c and try the original issue. Because of my another patch, you should get a warning "Unable to get image of current GL screen".

OK, at least, the viewport issue is fixed with line 221. BTW, have you tried g.region rast=elevation
? Not sure if that'll do anything here, but...
Maybe, MacOS requires additional OpenGL settings or something...

Hmm.. Please enable line 221 (this line works as expected. reporting the correct viewport size).
Test 1: change size=640,480 to size=512,512 (power of 2 for GL_TEXTURE_2D in line 148 in lib/nviz/render.c).
Test 2: lib/nviz/render.c line 148. change GL_TEXTURE_2D to GL_TEXTURE_RECTANGLE_EXT (to support non-power of 2 size)
I know the original reporter already tried these, but without line 221.

Yeah.. maybe, it's better to rewrite m.nviz.image in Python because nviz uses wx.glcanvas internally. Not sure about that.

One thing I found interesting is that in lib/nviz/draw.c, Nviz_draw_all() calls Nviz_draw_all_(surf, vect, site, vol) after switching the draw buffer to GL_BACK. Nviz_draw_all_(vect, site, vol) again switch the draw buffer to GL_FRONT_AND_BACK, draw stuff, and switch back to GL_BACK, but Nviz_draw_all_surf doesn't do that and seems to draw in the GL_BACK buffer that Nviz_draw_all initially set.
Now, since we're still in the GL_BACK buffer (because the other Nviz_draw_all_* switch back to the GL_BACK buffer at the end), GS_done_draw() in Nviz_draw_all tries to swap the front and back buffers using a user-defined function, which is a void function in m.nviz.image. So the back buffer with an image is never swapped with the front buffer, but gsd_getimage() reads the front buffer anyway to write the output, which is blank.
How does it work in Linux? I don't know. I tried to draw to GL_FRONT, GL_BACK, GL_FRONT_AND_BACK in Nviz_draw_all_surf, they all worked! I was able to produce a white blank image by drawing to GL_NONE though...
Since I cannot reproduce this issue myself, someone may want to try this.
- Draw the surface on the front buffer. lib/nviz/draw.c line 223. Change
GSD_BACK
toGSD_FRONT
.
OR (NOT both at the same time)
- Read the back buffer. lib/ogsf/gsd_prim.c line 921. Change
GSD_FRONT
toGSD_BACK

Yeah.. maybe, it's better to rewrite m.nviz.image in Python because nviz uses wx.glcanvas internally. Not sure about that.
Maybe a good idea. Then there would not be as much separate software maintenance needed to keep the interactive and command line versions functional and in sync across multiple platforms

BUT, glGetError() still returns GL_INVALID_OPERATION according to https://www.khronos.org/registry/OpenGL-Refpages/gl4/html/glReadBuffer.xhtml. Probably, that's why some Linux drivers and MacOS don't work at all.
Windows is also broken because nviz draws to the back buffer, but it reads from the front buffer without buffer swapping.

Please try these patches. They implement buffer swapping. I tested on Linux and got no errors.

Just tested this morning with the Mac r72978. It compiles now but still creates a solid black output, as before. No errors. Even with --verbose, this is all I get for messages:

That's interesting because I didn't make any changes to the Mac code in trunk other than moving aglSetPBuffer. Is the size correct BTW?

Right now, no other modules use nviz & ogsf for direct rendering and wxGUI & wxPython provide that capability, so I don't see any major issues at this moment.

FYI, on my VM, all cases except CGL without FBO work. Based on my research, CGL doesn't provide the default framebuffer, so we need to bind a framebuffer object (FBO) to render to. So I know why that combination doesn't work. The only case I cannot understand is that AGL without FBO works on my 64bit VM, but not on the real hardware. Cases 2 & 3 were never tested on the Mac yet.

Ok, cases 2 (both defined) and 3 (both undefined) don't work on the real Mac.
- AGL & no FBO: Mac (X), VM (O)
- AGL & ....FBO: Mac (X), VM (O)
- CGL & no FBO: Mac (X), VM (X)
- CGL & ....FBO: Mac (O), VM (O)
Maybe, cases 1 & 2 are a bug in VM ;-).
