GDAL/OGR Binaries

The GDAL project does not produce regular downloadable binaries (executables) for each release. However, a variety of efforts do produce ready to use binaries.

FWTools

The FWTools binary releases for Linux and Windows systems include the full set of GDAL libraries, utilities, python support and documentation along with lots of other stuff (including the OpenEV viewer). More information is available at:

http://fwtools.maptools.org/

The latest FWtools version for Windows, 2.4.7, dates back to a pre-1.6 GDAL version. In order to benefit from the latest and greatest, you can refer to the other binary builds mentionned in the here-after Windows section.

The FWTools binaries for Linux should work on pretty much any modern Intel Linux system (their production has started again with the experimental 3.0.X series).

Linux

Slightly out of date RPMs for SUSE, Mandriva and Fedora Core 4 are maintained by GDF Hannover Germany.

Fedora

GDAL 1.4.2, geos 2.2.3 and proj-4.5.0 are in Fedora 6 Extra. You can get the source RPMS or the i386 binaries

GDAL 1.4.1, geos 2.2.3 and proj-4.5.0 are now parts of Fedora 7 (Core and Extra have been merged together). You can get the source RPMs or the i386 binaries. GDAL 1.4.2 is available as an update for Fedora 7: source RPMs and i386 binaries

GDAL 1.4.2, geos 2.2.3 and proj-4.5.0 are in Fedora 8. You can get the source RPMs or the i386 binaries.

GDAL 1.5.1, geos 2.2.3 and proj-4.5.0 are in Fedora 9. You can get the source RPMs or the i386 binaries. GDAL 1.5.3 is available as an update for Fedora 9: source RPMs and i386 binaries

OpenSuSE

GDAL RPMs for OpenSuSE together with many other Geo-Tools are provided at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Application:/Geo/

Debian

The Debian GIS team maintains GDAL packages for Debian GNU/Linux.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty) contains GDAL 1.3.1, geos 2.2.1 and proj-4.4.9 in the universe repository.

Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy) contains GDAL 1.4.1, geos 2.2.3 and proj-4.5.0 in the universe repository.

Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy) contains GDAL 1.4.4, geos 2.2.3 and proj-4.6.0 in the universe repository.

Ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid) contains GDAL 1.5.2, geos 3.0.0 and proj-4.6.0 in the universe repository.

Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) contains GDAL 1.5.2, geos 3.0.0 and proj-4.6.0 in the universe repository.

A new UbuntisGIS is available on UbuntuGIS launchpad and provides up-to-date packages of GDAL for Ubuntu Hardy, Karmic and Lucid. For more information, you can consult the UbuntuGIS page.

MacOS X

William Kyngesburye maintains an extensive set of framework builds for GDAL and other GIS software at:

Windows

  • Minimalist windows executables are available at:

http://download.osgeo.org/gdal/win32/1.6/gdalwin32exe160.zip

  • Other plugins will be added in the same location (such as Oracle/OCI):

http://download.osgeo.org/gdal/win32/

  • A more featureful set of windows binaries, including python, proj and c# support is available as part of the FWTools package.
  • Windows binaries built in MinGW are available at:

http://map.hut.fi/files/Geoinformatica/win32/

The Geoinformatica-yy-mm-dd.zip contains GDAL (usually a development version), Perl-GDAL, Perl, and many other things.

  • Tamas Szekeres maintains a complete set of Win32 and Win64 binary packages (compiled with VC2003/VC2005/VC2008/VC2010) available at the following location.

http://www.gisinternals.com/sdk/

These packages are based on the current development and stable branches built from the GDAL SVN daily. The corresponding SDK packages are also available to download from this location. The -devel packages are based on the developement version (1.9.0dev at time of writing), and the -stable packages are based on the latest stable branch (1.8 at time of writing)

OSGeo4W

OSGeo4W is a binary distribution of a broad set of open source geospatial software for Win32 environments (Windows XP, Vista, etc). OSGeo4W includes GDAL/OGR, GRASS, MapServer, OpenEV, uDig, as well as many other packages (about 70 as of summer 2008).

Are you maintaining GDAL binaries for a platform? Please feel free to add pointers to the above!
