Multiple errors in the layereditor

Description
The layer editor is really the core of the editor. Unfortunately is has so many different settings that makes it difficult to test it all.
There are some problems with the different user interface elements, sporadic chrashes etc. I will keep this ticket here until I feel the editor is stable. If you spot a problem, please add it here as a comment. If you have ideas for improving the editor, please create a new ticket.

I have replaced the entire layer editor, with a brand new control. It feels much more intuitive, and I think the bugs are gone. If you spot a bug in the new layer editor, please open a ticket.
