Improve internal support for HTTP and Web Extensions API versioning

Description
Some API versioning use cases are not easily supported with the existing infrastructure. For example, the GETCAPABILITIES HTTP call which returns a different schema version is difficult to implement with the current infrastructure. This enhancement makes implementation of this more straightforward.
