GDAL Requirement

In the installation documentation under the section '2.2 Requirements', GDAL is listed as a required package for building or using PostGIS. I was able to install PostGIS without GDAL. Another developer here is using PostGIS and running tests against it without installing GDAL. I don't know if this was a packaging issue or the document should list GDAL as an optional package. I read the description for GDAL as being required, but others read it as only being required for raster support. Need clarification.

It is required if you want raster and to install PostGIS with extensions. You get neither without building with GDAL.

You are right though that it is more or less optional. I'll fix to make it optional. We had planned to make it required and I think that was written before we made it optional.
