somewhat related, I added to the compatibility matrix a section on GDAL. Can you check it and verify I didn't misstate?
http://trac.osgeo.org/postgis/wiki/UsersWikiPostgreSQLPostGIS I point people there when they ask what they should compile with since it's getting hard to remember what works with what.
I'm thinking it may be a good place too to tell people why they need x-version of GDAL and issues if they have to compile against lower (as I note for GEOS).
