Perform initial speed test for the selected sources

Description

Hi Jürgen

When I run the OSGeo4w setup I can select between 3 different sources:

  • OSGeo
  • OSUOSL
  • Norbit

I guess the first two are in the US and yours are of course in Germany. When I select all three sources it seems like it uses the first source if available and download everything from there. Sometimes this works just fine but at other times downloading everything from the US to me in Denmark is very slow (at around 200-250kb/s compared to 1-2MB/s from Germany). With downloads like the proj-data the difference in transfer speed does matter. I could just select your Norbit source (and that is normally my solution) but I guess that this removes the redundancy in case your site should be down (I haven't seen that though).

Would it be possible to implement a simple speed test towards the selected sources and then choose the source with the best transfer rate before downloading the request packages?

Kind regards, Casper

Well, the different sources don't necessarily need to have the same content (esp. user urls; this is for instance used for local repos that get feeded builds to base dependent builds on them - before everything is pushed to the main repo).

I see. In that case my suggestion will get more complicated to implement.
