Description
As I discussed here - https://discourse.osgeo.org/t/should-we-set-mute-categories-by-default/110412
I plan to change the admin setting "Mute all categories by default” to checked.
I think this is the best thing to do because as we add more categories, the news on daily digest etc, https://discourse.osgeo.org/new, https://discourse.osgeo.org/latest
will get very noisy for folks who are not interested in everything going on in all categories.
I think this may allow us to also turn back on mail list mode, since I think mail list mode, skips over muted categories.
This will help some of the issues people have complained about like not getting back their own posts and being able to get digests that just have the categories they are interested in.

slight change, I set the parent categories with sub categories to normal mode so the descriptions show on the homepage for new users. Since these don't allow topic posting, I don't think it will impact news/latest/etc or email for anyone since I don't think settings from parent categories drill down to child categories.
This however I did not apply to existing usrers, so existing users have all these marked as muted.
Done. There are some surprise changes in UI when you do this.
I'm still debating if these are good or not. For new users, probably not great, for existing users I think the experience is better.
I'll explain in detail on the https://discourse.osgeo.org/t/should-we-set-mute-categories-by-default/110412
