#3200 closed task (fixed)

create a mirror of this announce mailing list on discourse

Description

Please create a mirror of this announce mailing list on discourse.

This idea was suggested by Vicky some days ago.

  • Create the forum topic at Discourse. Important: it would be public (but we can make it private as well) and we would need to make that very clear in the wiki so no one is unaware of the scope of the message they are sending.
  • Create the forum group that provides the planet@… receiving email address,
  • Jorge Sans will sign up (and whoever wants to receive those emails)
  • Redirect the current planet@… to discourse

Is the pan ok like that. Any thoughts?

So what is the plan here? Where does the announcement category show up?

Announcements and news from OSGeo about projects, events and occurrences of interest.

Is this intended as a subcategory of general?

it would be good if the announce-mail would also show up in the

https://www.osgeo.org/community-news/ section and also at https://planet.osgeo.org/

The last mai lto announce was send at 30.9.2024 but it does not show up yet

Vicky - what did you do excactly? I can see messages at discourse https://discourse.osgeo.org/c/announce/60

Vicky is out at GSOC summit, but I think I can answer here.

The way we mirror mailings lists to discourse is a two step process

  1. We first add discourse@… email address to subscribe to the mailing list
  2. Then we set the incoming address of the category (in this case announce) to the list.osgeo.org mailing address of the mailing list. This part is needed so that discourse knows which category to direct the incoming mail addressed to <mailing list address>@list.osgeo.org

Now as to getting announce in community-news and planet.osgeo.org, both those I think need an Rss feed. The good news is that discourse has rss functionality built in. All you got to do is add .rss to the category.

So the rss of announce is:

https://discourse.osgeo.org/c/announce/60.rss

Just register that RSS on planet.osgeo.org and you'll begin to see announce flow thru.

As I recall I think community-news already aggregates planet, so I don't think you need to do anything there.

@jsanz can you take care of this request please since you manage planet.osgeo.org.

Thanks, Regina for the ping. I've added the RSS for the Announce category to the planet
