Hello,
Please consider this is a request to connect the OSGeo GSoC IRC with a new OSGeo GSoC Gitter channel. From the recent experience of GCI 2019, Gitter seems easy and reachable for frequent communication between the community members. A new Gitter channel for GSoC related information connected to the exisiting OSGeo GSoC IRC would be helpful for discussion. (This type of communication is existing for the OSGeo GEOS IRC.)
Please let me know if I should make a new Gitter channel first before connecting it to the OSGeo GSoC IRC. I will do it immediately.

Hi Sandro, Thanks for the inputs and sorry for delayed response.
Maybe we should not do the bridging for this year's GSoC as most of the communication (public announcement and internal discussion between mentors and admins) could be done using OSGeo mailing lists. If required, we can start working on this before GSoC 2021 after further discussion. So, for now, I will close the ticket with resolved as invalid. Thanks again!

Bridging between IRC and Gitter, for the GEOS case, is done via Matrix (matrix.org). Someone has to create a matrix channel, and then from the matrix client GUI (riot.im is a good one) initiate requests toward IRC and Gitter for bridging. IRC channel operator and Gitter room administrators each need to approve the request, so first step is finding out who can get op status in IRC for that channel (#osgeo-gsoc, I suppose).
