Dropbox replacement

Reported by: Delawen Owned by: sac@…
Priority: normal Milestone: Unplanned
Component: SysAdmin Keywords: dropbox migration
Cc: TemporSent

Description

The Board wants to ask the SAC team about installing some kind of open source replacement for the actual Dropbox solution we are using. Currently we are using around two Gigas of space in Dropbox, but if we don't have a space limit we can expect to use the storage more.

Personally I have used Owncloud and Nextcloud which are reliable and they have docker images: https://github.com/nextcloud/ but any similar service can be useful.

Thats why I prefer Nextcloud, but whatever the SAC thinks is best :)

I would like to ask the board to please make a list of required features, so we can find the most appropriate solution. Here's some example questions.

Do you just need a space to hold files that people can log into, or does it need a web interface? How fine grained do the permission need to be, is it all or none? Does it need to have desktop client on Win, Mac, Linux? Does it need an automated Sync client? per folder syncing? Does it need to keep old versions of files? For how long? I assume this is mostly docs, presentations, and pdfs... What the expected growth rate of files (based on past usage)? How many of the files are really Board only as opposed to public documents (no privacy requirement)? Do these need to be hosted on OSGeo servers? privacy, or just preference for solution?

I run Nextcloud myself and am very happy with it, so +1 for it from me

Hi, any news on this?

If you have a lot of work I can do this, I just need some ssh access to a server where I can deploy it.

Or if we don't have any server for this available, let us know to search for one.

There's a work in progress to install nextcloud in a Funtoo container. The leader of the project is TemporSent, you can find him in #osgeo-sac to help out.

I saw Nextcloud is up and running, and accepting LDAP. Was it tested by the requestors ? What's left to do there ? SSL seems to be working fine too, while I don't find a wiki page describing the setup and maintenance tasks to be performed. The service currently allows *every* OSGeo user to login, I guess, we want to restrict that ?

Any update on this issue? Note that I think we are maxed on space in Board Dropbox st this point.

tomkralidis we have nextcloud running here - https://nextcloud.osgeo.org

I was planning to move it to osgeo7 server, but haven't finished that yet.

At anyrate if you want to give it a try test out feel free to do so. You should be able to log in with your OSGeo account.
