Request account doesn't work

Description

I have tried to request a WIKI account.

I have filled out the form and successfully submitted it. Then I get an email where I need to verify my email address by clicking a link. Clicking the link seems to work but doesn't let me do anything.

When trying to request the account again I get the message:

Username is already in use in a pending account request.

The confirmation URL is:

I reviewed your request and accepted it now. Sorry that I did not directly respond on a sunny sunday afternoon. ;)

Christian, does the confirmation email mention the fact that requests need be approved ? It may help avoiding the confusion...

It does, so I was and am aware of the manual approval. But what confused me was, that I had requested an account about two weeks ago, but didn't receive any feedback. I cannot find the email address confirmation mail though.

Its possible, that I qualified your first request as spam. Its sometimes very difficult to see what is a valid request and what not. Please have a look at what kond of spam I have to deal with: https://wiki.osgeo.org/index.php?title=Special:ConfirmAccounts/authors&wpShowRejects=1

That page requires "Bureaucrat" status, which I don't have ...

If thats the case, then its okay :) I guess it would help to filter out the valid requests if the requester had a way to challenge the disqualification or at least know about it?

I would like to see, but haven't got the credentials.

Ok, I can tell you that I get >10 requests a day from humans, that write about their passion with Open SOurce GIS, of which 99% are spam, because they then put 50+ pages of links to external webpages and upload big documents after I accept them.

Wow, those numbers make me wonder how many spammers we are letting in on the LDAP side :(

If only we could at least have a single set of accounts (#165) we'd then share some of the effort

I have the option of directly rejecting as spam or holding a request. In the first case, the requestee is not notified, in the second case he gets a further question from me about what he/she wrote...

I would very much like that, but I am afraid, that I have no knowledge about LDAP, so that why I can't take care of this.

I don't think you need to know about LDAP to install the Mediawiki plugin. And you can count on me for help on the LDAP side. Anyway, this is best discussed in #165
