#1697 closed task (invalid)

Nobody replies from info@osgeo.org

Reported by: strk Owned by: sac@…
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: SysAdmin Keywords: userid, contacts
Cc: jachymc

Description

The info@… address is found on the OSGeo Userid page (http://www.osgeo.org/osgeo_userid) as the address to contact to reset a user's password ("In a pinch, contact info at osgeo.org for a password reset").

I did contact it on May 31. Today (June 3) nobody answered yet.

I suggest to setup an alias sending mail to the SAC chair or whoever takes care of users (a communication committee ?)

It turns out Jackim does get info@…: https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/sac/2016-July/007228.html

Not sure why he didn't answer me.

We need to setup policy. I'm in the alias of info osgeo org for some years. So far, "password reset" requests were handled by Frank immediately, therefore, I was ignoring them.

I would suggest, either to tell me how to contact SAC for direct password reset requirements - so that I do not have to come back to it any more, or SAC gets another alias, where password reset questions will go

Resolution: invalid
Status: newclosed

"password reset" can be done autonomously by users, see https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/SAC:LDAP#Password_reset (please see also #1749 if you can help updating the osgeo website)

To contact SAC (for other user registration problems) there's a mailing list: http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/sac Or another alias: sysadmin@… (fewer people there)

I'm closing this ticket as invalid (as people do receive info@… mails). Please followup on #1749 if you can.

ok, I'll respond with the wiki link next time

Some additional clarity on who is replying to what on info@ might be helpful. While I try to process password requests, they do sometimes get lost in my incoming email stream. The one procedure that I do think is important is that any reply to info@ email be done as a "reply-all" so others can see that the item was taken care of.

In my case I just asked to get a reply and got none. I agree that the policy should be to send replies to all, so everyone can tell which requests are handled and which aren't.

OK guys, I know now, why there is so many "password reminder" mails:

at http://www.osgeo.org/content/faq/getting_started.html

there is

Lost password?: Currently there is no automated mechanism to reset a password, or get a password reminder. In a pinch, contact 'info at osgeo.org' for a password reset.

Could you please update this, since I do not have access to drupal(?).

Thanks

I have updated the getting started page. Let me know if it is ok.

http://www.osgeo.org/content/faq/getting_started.html

I'm also happy to try and get you drupal update access if you are interested.

We should probably also change http://www.osgeo.org/osgeo_userid to read the same.

Done - let me know if there are any more updates needed.

Thanks Frank! I filed the /osgeo_userid problem as #1749 4 weeks ago but nobody followed up. The ticket was assigned to the "webcom" so a mail should have reached the corresponding mailing list. I'm afraid there's some problem with notifications, or communications in general.

Maybe you can look at #1732 too (change contact email for OSGeo Userid creation). Also, I noticed there's still a mention of "lack of password reminder" in the /osgeo_userid page (but maybe better to discuss this in #1749 -- I'll report there).

One more thing: people are sending mails to info at osgeo - org because our Wiki is using this address in the mail, asking for further details. Could you please consider the content of the mail, that it would explicitly tell what to do, how to provide the details and tell people *not* to send anything to info at osgeo, because the mail will be ignored anyway?

I've understood Christian evaluates the content of the mails received by info@… "manually". Please file a separate ticket if you think the wiki account creation email should have an updated content. File it under the "Wiki" component.

Also, it would be useful to have these procedures documented on the wiki itself..

no, thats not the case. I do not recieve the email that go to info at osgeo dot org. I only review the wiki account requests, that go through the ConfirmAccount system of the wiki installation. info@osgeo is not involved here.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
