GRASS mailing lists migration to OSGeo

Reported by: neteler Owned by: warmerdam
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: SysAdmin Keywords: mailman
Cc: tmitchell

Description

Due to technical problems with the itc.it domain (almost unreachable these days) and the commitment of GRASS to move to OSGeo infrastructure, I would like to request assistance to migrate GRASS Mailman lists to the OSGeo server.

The GRASS project (grass.itc.it) is using the same Mailman version (2.1.5). Hence I don't expect too many problems. I have experience in Mailman upgrade but not (yet) in change of machine.

The desired time frame is November since I suppose to lose control over 'grass.itc.it'/'grass.fbk.eu' at end of this year.

I would like to ask you suggestion on how to proceed.

Thanks in advance, Markus

After IRC chat with Frank, the proposal is

1. migrate lists to OSGeo
2. rename some lists (see below)

We should use that occasion to "normalize" some list names:

grass-abm
grass-announce
grass-commit
grass-commit-addons
grass-dev
grass-es
grass-psc
grass-qa
grassgui -> grass-gui
grassuser -> grass-user
statsgrass -> grass-stats
translations -> grass-translations
weblist -> grass-weblist
winGRASS -> grass-windows

Two further lists are there ('sqlgrass' and 'nviz') which have been closed but a public archive (could be renamed to grass-sql and grass-nviz if really needed).

I have completed the following lists:

grass-abm
grass-commit
grass-dev
grass-es
grass-psc
grass-qa
grass-user

Please test these, and I'll do the rest later in the day.

As noted in IRC I will merge the subscriber lists of GRASS_Announce@… and grass-announce and then blow away GRASS_Announce (to be superceded by grass-announce).

I have migrated and renamed:

grass-gui
grass-stats
grass-translations
grass-web
grass-windows

I have also migrated grass-announce, and merged in addresses from GRASS_announce@… that were missing. GRASS_announce has been removed (archives too), in favor of the contents of grass-announce.

I believe the migration is complete. Let me know if you see any problems. If not, please close this ticket.

Frank,

thanks - looks all good, I have updated contact address etc. in the list configurations. However, there seems to be an oversight from my side (apologies!):

grass-user might be better grass-users

for OSGeo consistency. If a pain, we could also simply add this as alias set in /etc/aliases.

I meanwhile think that an alias

grass-users: grass-user

would just do in /etc/aliases.

The list reflectors at grass.itc.it have been activated. Everything seems to be functional.

Markus, I have added the grass-users: grass-user alias.

Great job - thanks! I close the ticket.
