OGR STYLEITEM AUTO line pen styles broken in MS v6.0

Description
I have found that it is nearly impossible to use the pen styles from OGR STYLEITEM AUTO since starting to use version 6.0. For example, MS will look for ogr-pen-5 and find it in my symbol file, but I can't use PATTERN N N END anymore in the symbol definition. It gets overwritten by the STYLEITEM AUTO if I define the PATTERN in the STYLE inside of the CLASS of the LAYER. I can find no easy work-around for this except to have a large map file or use an older version of Map Server. I like the newer version of MS because of the better rendering. Is this something that will likely be fixed, or is auto-styling going away?

How difficult would it be to set up the class styles to override the OGR styles if class styles are defined? I might be able to assist in coding if I am pointed in the right direction.
Um... sounds like this side-effect was completely overlooked when the PATTERN stuff was moved the the CLASS STYLE level. Not sure what to suggest...
