Provide mapunits in template file

Here's an enhancement request: 
I'd like to have the UNITS parameter from a mapfile available in the template
file. I am doing client side distance measurements, and I need to distinguish
between degrees, meters, feet etc.
My current workaround is to add an entry ("units" "meters") to the WEB |
METADATA block, but then I still need to change this parameter in two places, if
the datasource changes.

Are you looking for the main UNITS (map level), layer UNITS or both?
