nviz isosurface drawing often crashes with segfault

Description
when drawing isosurfaces nviz often crashes for no apparent reason. sometimes it happens with the first isosurface to be drawn, other time it happily draws several and you can keep adding new ones and then it crashes e.g. when it redraws after changing polygon size.
