As this question comes up very regularly on the mailing lists, I've tried to improve the explanation of the concept of layers in the vectorintro.html file. Since this is a difficult topic, I wanted to post my proposal here, before committing it.

The diff is against the dev6 branch, but the relevant paragraphs are the same in grass7.

The new explanation makes sense to me, in particular the emphasis that attribute tables are optional. I made two small changes in the attached diff.
