#1296 closed task (fixed)

wx gui close shortcuts

Reported by: hamish Owned by: martinl
Priority: normal Milestone: 6.4.2
Component: wxGUI Version: svn-develbranch6
Keywords: keyboard shortcuts Cc: grass-dev@…
CPU: All Platform: All

Description

Hi,

before 6.4.1 final is released and the current situation gets locked in place (hence blocker status), I propose we change the exit-gui keyboard shortcut keys.

  • ctrl-q quits the entire gui
  • ctrl-w closes the current map display window

effective in all branches.

currently ctrl-w quits the entire gui in wxGUI, ctrl-q in tcltk gui.

thanks, Hamish

tested randomly on WindowsVista32 with some different software:

Adobe Reader X:

ctrl-q => close Adobe Reader X
ctrl-w => close actual document

Thunderbird 3.1.9:

ctrl-q =>
ctrl-w => close Thunderbird

OpenOffice 3.3:

ctrl-q => close OpenOffice
ctrl-w => close actual document

InternetExplorer 8

ctrl-q =>
ctrl-w => close tab (if only one tab, IE closed)

R (www.r-project.org)

ctrl-q =>
ctrl-w =>

Garmin MapSource

ctrl-q =>
ctrl-w => wypoints-properties

Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/)

ctrl-q =>
ctrl-w => close actual tab
ALT-F4 => close Notepad++

Firefox 3.6.15

ctrl-q =>
ctrl-w => close actual tab

there seems to be no 100% compliance on windows, but I would vote for the proposed.

And what about other windows (e.g. graphical modeler). Currently these windows are closed by ctrl-w.

I'd leave them as-is, although if ctrl-w closed map display windows too it makes it a bit risky that you close the wrong one? I guess there's the "Are you sure?" backup for that though.

My main point is "W" to close Windows (or document tabs, as may be the case in various other software); "Q" to Quit the entire program.
