firefox sometimes returns status 0 for ajax requests

Description
This 'feature' causes problems like metadata editor not unlocking the screen when doing add/save etc, 'undefined' in search results
Net knowledge doesn't seem to let us know why this occurs - in the meantime we can trap the condition rather than let strange, unexpected things happen
Haven't seen this problem with the new guiwidgets interface yet
firefox - all recent versions affected it seems?

Later versions of firefox (those released in the last 6 months) don't seem to have this issue.

svn revision #8587 catches some of these in the editor (classic interface) and advises to save as not sure what else we can do here?
