Buffer operation should have 2 options/varieties, one option should consider the curvature of datum while calculating buffer, while other option should calculate buffer in a plane. The curvature of datum is important when buffer is done for thousands of kiometers.

I am not aware of such an option being available from the underlying GEOS buffer so there isn't much potential to implement it.

Generally speaking if you want geometry operations on the ellipse OGR doesn't provide much for you unless you are willing to interpolate the data yourself.

I wonder how PostGIS is doing these things on the "geography" type these days.
