GDAL driver metadata is handy to get long and short names for drivers; it's also nice to get filename extensions used to populate open file dialogs. OGR current doesn't have such a mechanism, and probably could benefit from a similar implementation.

So it's been over a year and a half since I added this; any chance that this is going to get added anytime Real Soon Now? GetInfo() is such a tease; it just returns NULL.

Mark, This would be my "grand unification" of GDAL and OGR and there is no sign of it happening in the near future.

Should 9 years count as near futyre ;-) ? Anyway, RFC 46 closes this ticket !
