Description
I create m4 macro AX_LIB_GDAL to detect GDAL/OGR headers and libraries. The macro has been tested and improved by Alessandro Candini and is considered as ready for use.
I have also submitted it to GNU Autoconf Archive: Submission of AX_LIB_GDAL macro (with macro attached)
Perhaps it is a good idea to include this macro in GDAL distribution, so it can be installed along GDAL for convenience of GDAL users who may need to determine GDAL installation details in their projects.

Mateusz,
Do you know what is the usual practice for .m4 macros : does package XXX usually install its XXX.m4 for the benefit of other packages ? And if it is the case, what is the recommanded path where to install it ?

Even,
Unfortunately, I don't now.
I have taken the liberty to add Frankie from Debian to CC. Perhaps he will know or point usefull resources.

This ticket has been automatically closed because Trac is no longer used for GDAL bug tracking, since the project has migrated to GitHub. If you believe this ticket is still valid, you may file it to https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/issues if it is not already reported there.
FYI, AX_LIB_GDAL macro has been accepted to the official GNU Autoconf Archive
