Trent Hare has requested that the WMS driver be extended to support the OGC Tiled WMS Specification. This ticket is intended to track this effort.
The only public document I could easily find on this is 07-057r2 - OpenGIS Tiled WMS Discussion Paper.

It does not appear this approach has been adopted as a specification.
