My terminal gets completely unreadable after I run gdalinfo on some of my tiff
files, please see http://www.biol.uni.wroc.pl/sieczka/udostepnione/gdal/chineese.png

Maciek,

I have had no problem reproducing your problem.  I'm afraid that GDAL
makes no attempt to sanitize metadata text and in the case of TIFF there
is essentially no way for the code to know the text is going to be problematic.

It is the image description tag from the TIFF file that has odd escape sequences
in it.
