Actually the GDAL 1.8 support for ecw images is not included in the Osgeo4w installer.

The gdal-ecw package has been updated for ECW SDK 4.1 and GDAL 1.8.

You are correct - the gdal-ecw package is still in need of an upgrade to work with GDAL 1.8.
I'll try to do this soon.
