Description

Hi!

In discourse.osgeo.org, can you create a sub-category of "Local Chapters" for the Alberta Chapter (Canada)?

It could be named “Canada - Alberta” maybe so that it’s sorted by countries?

Thanks!

Oh that's right, I'll get back to you about who should be the admin, and if the sub-category should be public or not.

I see this:

https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/alberta/

Would you like to move it to discourse?

Not sure yet if we want to move completely to Discourse. That would require some communications with the members. I just recently joined the group and I'm in contact with the leads.

I got the answers.

  1. The admin should be, username ScottMcHale
  • If you can add a co-admin, add myself, username gabrielcossette
  1. The sub-category should be public

Let me know if you anything else, thanks!

This is exciting, Discourse is a very good OSS forum platform.

This is an idea:

  • import Alberta mailing list to discourse
  • as mailing list: Alberta at discourse and Alberta at lists can coexist while members of the mailing list migrate to discourse.
    • On the mailing list footer add a link to the discourse category information so people can follow the link and register to discourse
  • After, say a month or two, Alberta mailing list can be disabled with a last message about the disabling.
    • A link to the mailing list archives to reference the last couple of months (when they are few)
    • OR import the last messages (if they are a lot this is better)

Note that discourse works differently than the mailing lists.

  • There is no category owner yet (that feature is not been implemented)
  • There are groups:
    • Everyone: all registered people on discourse
    • Named-groups: a group of people for particular permissions
  • The permissions:
    • see: Can read topics
    • reply: Can reply to a topic
    • create: Can create a topic

So for example: For Group:

  • name: Canada - Alberta
  • slug: alberta
  • People can: join and leave freely
  • owners: ScottMcHale, gabrielcossette

For category:

  • name: Canada - Ablerta
  • slug: alberta
  • mail: alberta at discourse dot osgeo dot org
  • group everyone: see, reply
  • group alberta: see, reply, create
  • no owner concept exists on categories yet.
Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
