ka-Map2 needs a home

Description

At Ominiverdi we are working at the second version of ka-Map!

This new version integrate Openlayers as map rendering engine. We think that this new version could revitalize the community, offering a 'ready to go' integrated system to have modern map navigation and a cache system that is efficient and stable since long. All based on the stability of UMN Mapserver and Openlayers.

We would love to have a Trac instance and a SVN repository. The reason we are not using the original repository is:

  • it is a CVS,
  • the structure of ka-Map! deeply changed with the inclusion of Openlayers breaking in part backward compatibility. the usage of the same repo will result in a mess (refactoring the dirs tree is impossible in CVS without loss of info).
  • we will have just a couple of files unchanged from the original version
  • documentation should be rebuilt and could finally be in the same web site of the project (now it is in a wiki in our server)
  • we are actually not able to add new users to repository commit and we are not able to publish new releases to the official web site in an easy form (we should prepare packages then ask to others at DM Solutions).
  • We have tried to stimulate the group of developers but they are involved in other projects.

Ohloh states I'm the only active mantainer (I post Andrea Cappugi's code too): https://www.ohloh.net/projects/ka-map/factoids/913219

we have the repository of ka-map2 in a Sourceforge dir but it's not dedicated. Doing another Sourceforge account could be a solution but we would love to be an anoficial project in OSGeo. Sourceforge doesn't offer a decent Trac too.

I see that at the time that ka-Map2 was submitted to Savannah, which I believe is another ticket tracker, but I can't find any evidence that code was ever put there.

I've looked on ohloh at the ka-Map project, but it seems that the last commit there was more than a year ago.

Is ka-Map2 still under active development? Is there still a need for it to find a home within OSGeo? Based on what I've seen so far, I'm going to assume that the project has died off. (Perhaps this is for want of a home, I don't know, but I haven't heard hide nor hair of ka-Map for a while.)

If you are still in need of a home, please feel free to re-open the ticket.

we should contact Jachym & omniverdi.org (Luca Casagrande & Lorenzo Becchiabout) about this.

Savannah is GNU.org's foss version of SourceForge.

Chris is right, there has been no more development on that code. Lack of support in the time I was creating this ticket has been one of the reason to leave this project to its destiny.

You can keep the ticket close.

Lorenzo (aka ominoverde/ominiverdi)
