Make Event Submission Easier/Obvious

Reported by: warmerdam Owned by: webcom@…

Description

Currently there does not seem to be any obvious information on the osgeo web site on how to add events to the events calendar at http://www.osgeo.org/events.

We need something like a "Submit Events" link that explains what to do, like we have for news items.

The page http://www.osgeo.org/events should be cleaned (remove "deprecated") and instructions how event proposals work (see below) should be added. This page should also link to both the archive (I suggest the Wiki) and to the current calendar at http://www.osgeo.org/event

A corresponding Wiki page describes event management here: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Event_Management

Including details on how to propose a new event: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Event_Management#Proposing_Participation_at_an_Event

We could copy this to a new page to make it more obvious?

If people follow this process it should be possible to track everything through the categories: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Category:Events

It is not clearly defined how events in the Wiki tagged as "Events" later magically appear in the portal calendar. Currently this is a pull job for WebCom which is probably not a good idea. Maybe we should instead make this a push job of the Event Owner: http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Event_Management#Event_Owner

I leave this ticket open as I am not sure whether this is what you were looking for.

It is unclear to me why http://www.osgeo.org/events should be cleaned up and un-deprecated. It is a left over of the old manual events calendar.

The rest of your suggestions seem to relate to Marketting Committee related events management. The web site events calendar often includes events at which OSGeo does not really have formal "Marketting Committee" style attendance but which relate to OSGeo in some useful fashion and that we want to let people know about. So there aren't necessarily "event management" type wiki pages for all events in the web site events calendar. (IMHO this is a good thing)

Revisiting this, and adding wolf - drupal guru - to the cc: list.

Wolf,

I would like to add a link to http://www.osgeo.org/submit_events to top of http://www.osgeo.org/events and at the bottom of the events box on the main page (in a manner analygous to the news queue). Would you be willing to give a hand with this?

I see this is a duplicate of #305.
