Description
GDAL currently requires that it be built in the source tree. This is a shame as you often want several builds with different compiler flags or configure --options. Standard GNU packages using configure allow for out-of-tree builds.

This ticket has been automatically closed because Trac is no longer used for GDAL bug tracking, since the project has migrated to GitHub. If you believe this ticket is still valid, you may file it to https://github.com/OSGeo/gdal/issues if it is not already reported there.

See TracTickets
for help on using tickets.
This is a known issue. I thought there was a ticket about that, but couldn't find it Implementing this is probably a significant work as GDAL only uses autoconf, but not automake, so that would require probably hacking all GNUmakefile
