./configure fails on Suse 8.1 (+ misc)

Description 

./configure tries to delete "core"
Not only is core a directory, it seems to contain some relevant files.
Version: 1.1.8
which I got from your site 6/23/2003  via cvs.

In GDAL 1.1.9 the core directory has been renamed gcore to avoid these problems.
