Currently, the OGR SQL documentation does not include any information about spatial index creation, about how to use the CREATE SPATIAL INDEX statement work, etc.

It should be updated ASAP.

There is a lot of helpful information about spatial index in action, posted as comments to #1594.

Actually, the CREATE SPATIAL INDEX query is supported by ESRI Shapefile driver only, so I updated notes in the driver manual (r12546)
