Fixed in 5.5beta4, by disabling XFCE ($ sudo service gdm stop) while building the VM

for help on using tickets.
[tested with 5.5beta3 VM]
if you create a new user with 'sudo adduser yourname', then log in as you your new account gets the Apps & Geospatial menus on the top taskbar, the keyboard switcher applet, etc, all ok (so the skeleton files are ok). So it's just the local
user
which has lost that and the fix is probably just a little tweak..in the "what changed?" dept: is there some difference in the way that Alex used to create the VM and the current build? (i.e. had the "user" logged in to a xfce session prior to the osgeo install scripts running? [and so already generated the desktop files in ~/.config etc])
