I'm in favour of promoting an Open, symbol dataset, but would first like to hear thoughts from projects about which icon sets exist, and what icon sets projects are using or considering, and whether projects would welcome incorporating a common symbol set into each of the projects.

Replying to camerons:

(I've just added Maki to the list)

I think the goal of using common data sets needs refining.. for major, big-on-disk data like detailed maps of the political and geophysical world, one set, a strong priority, and strong pushback against single app data sets makes a whole lot of sense. But for something that is tiny-on-disk, requires a lot of work to integrate, and has far less credibility as a "one version fits all" like map icons ?
Our aspirational goal of common data sets stands, but should rationally be viewed proportional to the context. There is no harm in a half-megabyte of nice icons with a libre license on the disk, while others decide to incorporate it or not.
ps- inventory and promotion of the cornucopia of resources on the Live is always a good thing.

looks nice. where to put them? anyone want to write the rules files to .deb-ize them? (97 .svg POI icons in 3 sizes)
fyi there are already a number of POI icon sets on the disc provided by the openstreetmap-map-icons-* packages & installed in the install_gpsdrive script to /usr/share/icons/openstreetmap/ (~2600 PNG files). you can preview them here:

ps- poorly documented trac feature: its parsing code wants keywords to be separated by commas
