If MapServer can do caching of WFS requests why can it not do the same for WMS? This seems like a logical extension of the idea and could really help with performance in WMS requests since the same layers and extents are often requested.
Daniel's reply:
Caching WMS requests could be done the same way. The reason why it's not been done yet is that WMS was done first, and this caching idea came up only when working on WFS later on due to the large amount of GML data transferred sometimes... and we never came back to add caching to WMS.

Any update on this? I believe the GDAL WMS driver has this capability?

I say we close as WONTFIX. That seems like a low-priority-nice-to-have that will sit there until someone needs this badly enough to implement or fund it, at which time we can always reopen.
