So often templates (especially headers and footers) tend to be *very* short, like 1 line. What about the option of treating them as files first, and if that fails then simply as text and echo the text? That way you store the template in the map file. Users would still get the debugging info (i.e. the file name shows up on the page if there's something wrong). Steve
