Description
DescribeFeatureType always output items as XML type "string".
Some colleagues have asked if possible to output to be more indicative of the underlying datatype of the item.
Currently, one can define LAYER metadata "gml_item_type" to override the default. But this may be labourious for data with many items.
The root of this (I think) is in mapgml.c, function msWFSWriteElement and msWFSWriteConstantElement.

Tom, there is more to this than a few modifs to mapgml.c. I started looking at this a while ago in ticket #462 but never finished it.
I say it's definitely too late for 5.4 and could be considered for 6.0.
