I've got a suggestion regarding osmconf.ini: I think it's useful to add key-value-combinations to closed_ways_are_polygons. Examples are highway=platform or public_transport=platform. Sometimes, area=yes is missing here.

Adding closed_ways_are_polygons=highway or closed_ways_are_polygons=public_transport would create lots of invalid data, f.e. turning circles would be converted to areas.
