However gdal is assigning projections to the data, ArcMap cannot read it. This could be related to spaces in the name or how gdal defines epsg since ArcMap has it's own method. I also want to mention that I am not certain that the coordinate system I compared it to previously is the exactly correct one as it did not have the NSIDC in the title. The fastest way to resolve this is to just define the projection in ArcMap using the batch mode of the "define projection" tool. If you are not familiar with this please let me know and we can discuss it further. To really demonstrate what was going on please do the following 1) Read the metadata for your current file using gdal. 2) In ArcMap run the "define projection" tool (on a copy of the data) and define the same projection in ArcMap 3) compare them in GDAL and you will see that the ArcMap version is different (no spaces also a few different parameters) 4) In QGIS open the raster and extract the .prj file 5) In ArcMap define the projection of another copy using the .prj file created in QGIS 6) Compare this to the previous to files You will see that when GDAL exports to .prj (ArcMap compatible) it changes the formatting so that it works in ArcMap. Essentially, you need to either apply our projection to your raster or apply the .prj from QGIS to your raster in ArcMap. It is possible that you could adjust the projection that is applied directly in gdal, but I cannot really provide support on this. I would recommend using the comparison in gdal from the above workflow to help do this if it is required. If this is not clear then please let me know and we can plan a phone call to discuss it further.
