PostGIS/PostgreSQL and other dependency matrix

This is a matrix that defines recommended versions of core dependencies for each version of PostGIS

The following is a guideline to install PostGIS onto most UNIX-like systems from either prebuilt packages (where maintained) or source.

PostGIS 2.1 (still in development)

No PostGIS 2.1 guides available yet, but there are currently no new dependencies either except to take full advantage of new interruptibility feature you need GEOS 3.4.0+ and you need at least GEOS 3.3 to run PostGIS 2.1

For now just follow the 2.1 guides (from source versions)

PostGIS 2.0

• Debian 6.0 (squeeze) - uses PostgreSQL 8.4
  • from source
• Debian 7.0 (wheezy) - uses PostgreSQL 9.1
  • from source
• Fedora 16 (Verne)
  • using PGDG YUM/RPM packages
• Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (lucid) - uses PostgreSQL 8.4
  • from source
• Ubuntu 11.10 (oneiric) - uses PostgreSQL 9.1

• Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) - uses PostgreSQL 9.1
  • hacky hybrid approach

• Windows both 32-bit and 64-bit (same step for all versions of PostgreSQL)
  • Compiling in Windows all PostgreSQL (x32bit MingW 3.4.5)
  • Compiling PostGIS 2.0 under Windows using MinGW-w64/Msys
